At the time Prof. George Shaw of Central Holiness University (later Vennard College) wrote The Spirit in Redemption t he Azusa Street Revival had awakened increased emphasis on the Holy Spirit. Shaw felt that throughout history there was insufficient stress on the work of the Third Person of the Trinity. Although he was Dean of the School of Theology of CHU, he wrote the book in language and concepts easily understood by laymen rather than in the intricacies of his academic colleagues. He shows the Divine Hand in leading people to repentance through reproof, into regeneration, and on into sanctification. But he does not stop there. He talks about concrete events such as the witness of the Spirit, both direct and indirect; the value of self-examination (“Too much introspection is dangerous to the soul’s growth… Too much self-examination leads to darkness and unbelief and morbidmindedness and despair”); dealing with trials and temptations (“The more holy a man is, the more violent at times will be the temptations he will be called to endure”); the leading, guidance and anointing of the Spirit, and many more practical observations. Though written more than a hundred years ago, it is not archaic in its content or style, but still fresh and relevant. It will bless readers to their very soul.
