The Offices of the Holy Spirit By: Dougan Clark Dr. Clark had a unique style in his writing. A medical doctor, his inquiring mind was obviously highly competent and logical. This made him a speaker in great demand for his day, and a spiritual force at the height of the holiness revival in the late nineteenth century. His evangelistic engagements took him across America and England. This book is exemplary of his expositional style and his knowledge of holiness theology. His comparison of instantaneous vs. progressive sanctification (chapter seven) is alone worth the price of the book. Here he describes boarding a steamship for his trip to Britain, comparing the moment of committing himself to the care of the captain to the actual progress of the trip across the Atlantic. It is an extremely effective description of the difference between purity and maturity, an outworking of Wesley’s earlier assertion that the believer makes progress toward sanctification, is sanctified in an instant, then continues to make progress in perfect love for the rest of his life. The entire book consists of such expert writing, and will edify both the seeker and the Sanctified.
