As L. L. Pickett (Leaves from the Tree of Life) penned the manuscript for The Book and Its Theme in the late 1800s, the Methodist Church (along with Christianity in general) faced many threats and challenges to core beliefs. The recent publication of Charles Darwin’s theory of natural evolution, which was finding fertile ground in scientific circles; the rise of biblical criticism, with its attendant platform of doubt; the hedonistic culture of the Gilded Age, with its accompanying greed and growing quest for self- indulgence; and other such social pressures, all introduced tension within the church in Western Civilization. Even in John Wesley’s beloved Methodism, the increasing desire for “acceptance” caused many to look askance at core doctrines. Questions about the authority of Scripture and the imperative of Scriptural holiness created a coolness toward the preaching of entire sanctification and those who fervently witnessed to the blessing. In such a daunting environment this book answers honest questioners in search of truth, bolstering the believer and encouraging the seeker. It is still valid today—indeed, it may be even more needed now than when it was first written. (Code: 6629; Pages: 274) This Schmul Publishing Co. edition is not a scanned facsimile of a used book.
