Biographical / Historical / Anecdotes

E.E. Shelhamer evangelized, planted churches and pastored during the height of the American Holiness Movement revivals in the late 1800s-early 1900s. His evangelistic ministry carried him around the world, to South America, Australia, Europe, Africa and Asia. Sixty Years of Thorns and Roses, the autobiography of this Free Methodist preacher, is peppered with persecutions, controversies, grief and trials—some of them, literally judicial trials. (He went to jail more than once for preaching on the street—in America!) It also stands as a prime example of the providence and leading of God for those who are in the center of His will. Utilizing the metaphor of the rose bush for life’s difficulties (“thorns”) and blessings (“roses”), he relates the story of his multiple arrests, the death of a child and his first wife, conflicts with denominational (and anti-denominational) leaders, and opposition from unbelievers and backsliders. And he tells the narratives of miraculous healings, provision of needed supplies, protection from assaults, divine leadings in relationships, and best of all, the salvation and sanctification of hundred of souls.
