Jesse Lee, A Methodist Apostle is the account of a man who was the first historian of Methodism in America, twice served as a Revolutionary War soldier, five times as Chaplain of the US Congress (both the House of Representatives and the Senate), a close companion to Francis Asbury— and as an ironman in the saddle of a circuit rider. Though his name is not so well known today, William Meredith tells how Jesse Lee was renowned for his preaching, singing and organizational abilities, not to mention his hardiness as he rode horseback to widespread preaching points in the dead of New England winters. Born, born again, and sanctified in colonial Virginia, he plunged into preaching right away. By listening closely to the sermons of godly ministers, the young farm boy learned how to construct a sermon and deliver it effectively. He quickly came to the attention of Francis Asbury and was soon established as a capable circuit rider in Virginia and the Carolinas. Learning of the lack of Methodist preachers in New England, he yearned to spread the good news of full salvation in that region that had been solidly Calvinist since the days of the Puritans. Before he was even ordained, he was sent to ride circuit for thousands of miles throughout the area. Often alone, with his winsome singing and powerful preaching, he persevered to firmly plant the roots of the new Methodist Episcopal Church, spreading the bright message of salvation and holiness of heart .
