Mission-mindedness has always been a hallmark of the Wesleyan revivals. Once Methodism was established in the New World, its members heard and answered the call to darkened tribes on the continent, and Methodist schools and churches were a common sight on the frontier. By Canoe and Dogtrain is the story of a Wesleyan missionary to the Indians near Lake Winnipeg, in what is now the Canadian province of Manitoba. Although economically it was an outpost of the famous Hudson’s Bay Company, in the latter half of the 1800s the area was a howling wilderness, accessible only by boats in warm weather, and dogsleds in wintertime. Here is a recounting of the author’s exciting, true-life adventures as he and his wife face dangers from hostile tribes, wild animals and a beautiful but harsh environment, where temperatures regularly drop into life-threatening ranges far below zero. Through it all the missionaries labored successfully to bring the light of the gospel to people crying out for Christ. This is a stirring example of the sacrifices made by dedicated men and women who left home and hearth behind to reap the harvest.
